Title: Small Business Website Design Strategies

Author: Charles Preston

Article:
Small Business Website Design Strategies

For a small business a website can have a massive impact on
whether that small business thrives or dies out. There are
several very important differences between a website built for a
large business and a website built for a small business. It's
important that a small business and the website design company
who builds the website for that small business are aware of
those differences so that the website has the greatest positive
impact.

First of all don't try to look and act like the big boys. If you
are a small business please do not plaster your site with
platitudes like "family owned since 1642" or "customer service
is our specialty" blah blah. IBM and Coke can get away with
having pretty sites that blather on and on using all kinds of
corporate jargon but a small business cannot do that. Here's
why...

Big companies are already established brands. They can rest on
their laurels now; at least they think they can. A small
business website needs to grab the visitor by the throat with
some hard hitting headlines and copy and get busy proving its
case because before visiting that website it's likely the
visitor has never heard of that small business.

Think of it like a courtroom. The small business is on trial
it's products and services are suspect from the get go. That
small business needs to prove beyond a shadow of doubt that it
can provide the best value over its competitors. What's worse is
that you only have about 8 seconds from the time the visitor
hits the homepage to the time they click the back button to hook
them into your sales copy.

The number one difference here is the copy. A small business
website needs to be a life support unit for its unique selling
proposition or USP not a contestant in this year's flashy foo
foo web design award contest. Win customers not awards. Forget
the animation and music and go easy on the images. What a small
business needs is a lean, mean conversion machine.

Studies show the visitors don't even consciously register images
until after they have absorbed the copy on the page. Makes sense
because what they came for was information not the old
receptionist at the desk on the phone pictures that we have seen
over and over again. They want to know who the heck you are and
what you can do for them and make it snappy!

It's brutal but that's the way it works. A small business that
knows this and applies this to their website has a huge
advantage over those who don't. So if you are a small business
owner and need a website keep this article in mind or if you
have an existing website take a look at it and reevaluate it's
effectiveness in light of this information. Small changes can
have dramatic effects on sales conversion.

Title: Professional Web Design Services

Author: Steve Hill

Article:
Are you looking for a professional web design service, however
are only on a small budget? This article gives you free advice
and tips about how to obtain a cheap but quality web design.
There are also some very valuable website promotion tips. I hope
you enjoy the read.

How To find cheap website design companies.

You may think that you need to spend hundreds of pounds to have
an internet prescence. I do not agree and believe that for a
basic information type website, the maximum you should have to
spend is £100. There is a large amount of competition in the
website design sector which means that you are able to pick and
choose the best deals available. For people who are willing to
be patient and who are prepared to make lots of phone calls and
send lots of e-mails, a quality company offering cheap web
design services should not be difficult to find.

You can find these cheap website design companies by looking on
internet auction websites such as ebay, internet search engines
such as google or in the Yellow Pages. It could also be worth
asking family and friends and also looking in newspapers.

Website promotion advice

It is likely that most people who have a website are looking at
ways to increase the amount of traffic they have to their site
and would like a higher page rank. In general the higher the
page rank you have, the more visitors you are likely to obtain.

The best way to increase your websites page rank is by getting
as many backward links to your website as possible. You can do
this by e-mailing other websites preferably in the same business
sector as your own and asking if they would be willing to swap
links with your site. This can be a very time consuming project
and it could be worth your while joining a program like
linkmetro.

Writing articles like the one you are reading here is another
way of obtaining backward links. This is what I believe is the
best form of website promotion as the links that you will
receive are one way, and have a higher value in the eyes of the
search engines. By submitting these articles to article
websites, other webmasters are then able to use your article on
their website, thus giving you an extra link. This is because
you are able to add your information and web address in the
author bio at the bottom of the page.

You may also want to consider google adwords. This is a form of
pay per click where you pay to appear on the right side of the
search results in the paid advertising section of the google
search engine for a specific key phrase. Always remember not to
spend more on the advertising than you are likely to earn from
the website.

If you would like to earn extra money from your website you may
want to consider google adsense. This is where the search engine
google, put adverts onto your website. When your visitors click
on the ads you get paid.

Title: How Big Is Your Website?

Author: Jim Hoffman

Article:
Many online experts will tell you that all you need is a one
page sales site to make money online. While this is in many ways
true, if you have been online for any amount of time, the idea
of a one page site is a novelty.

Even just having a one page site requires you to also have other
pages that co- exist with the main page.

Thank you page Privacy notice Disclaimer Terms of use

These are just basics. You will find yourself adding other pages
in a short time:

Help pages Linking pages contact page

Plus if you are looking to rank better in the search engines,
you will find yourself putting in content pages with interesting
articles. Adding other pages like a page of freebies for your
visitors or even simple interactive add-ons to make your site
"sticky".

The thing is - you will need many other pages to get your site
ranked within the search engines, build trust with your visitors
and establish yourself as a professional within your niche.

My suggestion is to start slow. You don't want to build too many
pages at once (too many pages can seem like spamming). Put a few
articles on your site each month. Add some easy interactive
features to your site.

Depending on your niche you can find free articles online that
you can reprint within your site. You can also find some tools
to add to your site for your visitors to use.

You should also place a links page that includes links you
exchange with other sites as well as any sites you feel your
visitors can benefit from. Don't just add affiliate links and
reciprical links. Actually put links that are a value to your
visitors. This will help establish you as someone they can trust
and not just a person looking to sell them something at every
turn.

Finally, be sure to your navigation includes access to your
pages so it will help you with SEO and make it easy for visitors
to find what they want.

I am sure that once you begin and make that one page site - you
will slowly find yourself adding more content, links and offers
for your visitors. All this will help you increase your search
engine popularity, make your site "sticky" and help establish
that trust with your visitors that can turn that one page site
into one that converts sales.

Title: Look Out For Content

Author: Ken McKay

Article:

Search engines list web pages in order of relevance to a search.
How relevant to a search is the content of your web site?

<b>Content:</b>

One of several factors contributing to relevance to a search is
the content of a web site. If you search the web for say toys,
then it goes without saying that websites at the top of the
search results will be all about toys, more toys and have many
details about toys.

<b>Times have changed:</b>

Websites built a few years ago had less competition for search
rankings. There are now more competing websites being added
every day on any subject. Many web sites still present just a
home page mentioning the product or service once, with contact
details. The pages may be well laid out with attractive
graphics. But their owners need to understand why they are not
high in search results. It is now almost impossible for a
website with just a home page and a few inside pages to be found
high in search results.

<b>What is relevant content?</b>

If Website A displays its products, details of their uses,
descriptions, related information and articles about them, and
Website B just displays its products, obviously Website A has
more relevant content than Website B. Website A will be more
highly ranked than Website B. If there are a million listings
for that product, then it's unlikely that Website B will be
found in the first few pages.

<b>How to get relevant content:</b>

Fill your home page with many words about the products,
mentioning the products as often as possible. e.g. If the
products are toys, then say: "toys are... toys do... big toys...
little toys... new toys... toys have... toys to suit..." etc.
Persuade your visitors that you know everything there is to know
about your products. Have as many inside pages as possible
mentioning the products and linking back to the home page. Web
pages for:

- descriptions of the products,

- expanded product details,

- comparisons with other products,

- uses for the products,

- maintenance of the products,

- frequently asked questions (FAQ) about the products,

- histories of the products,

- new products,

- newsletters, with archives of previous issues,

- top ten sales,

- special promotions,

- articles about the products,

- testimonials mentioning the products,

- links to other relevant websites about the products.

<b>Get help from others:</b>

Your customers can provide all the content for 'Frequently Asked
Questions' pages and 'Testimonials' or 'Feedback' pages. If you
can't spend time writing articles, or can't write articles,
there are many article publishing websites happy to provide
these to you. It all increases the content of your website.

<b>Be relevant:</b>

The more relevant content you can get, the higher your web site
will rank. But if you don't rank high because you don't have
relevant content, then all the money you have spent making the
website look beautiful could be wasted if not enough people see
it

Title: Web Site Maintenance

Author: Biana Babinsky

Article:
Many web site owners stop paying attention to their web sites
once the sites are up and running. "Why should I change anything
on my web site? Nothing about my business has changed in the
past 6 months" is a common refrain. A web site is a work in
progress: existing customers come to your web site from time to
time to see what's new; potential customers will often visit
your web site several times before actually buying from you;
search engines visit your web site from time to time to refresh
their indices and record any changes.

Here are the top three ways regular web site maintenance can
improve your bottom line:

1. Encourage your customers to return. Visitors will stop coming
to your site if they don't find any fresh content for prolonged
periods. New information, on the other hand, will ensure that
your web site and information about your products and services
will be fresh in the minds of your customers.

2. Put your best foot forward with potential customers. When
prospective customers visit your web site, they want to make
sure that your business is solid so that they can shop with
confidence. A recently updated web site will score extra points
with potential customers and will go a long way in earning their
trust.

3. Maintain your search engine rankings. Search engine spiders
(software that indexes your pages) will visit your sites
periodically to check for new content. Fresh content is one of
the metrics search use to determine your site's search engine
ranking. Sites that are never or rarely updated (and hence have
potentially stale content) tend to gradually lose their rankings
over time.

I can hear you thinking: "I can see how site maintenance can
help my business. But where do I get fresh content?" Here are a
few ideas to get you started:

1. Focus on industry news. What is happening in your industry?
Interesting industry headlines can be a veritable treasure trove
of fresh content. Add impact by tying news in with your products
or services.

2. Identify new or improved products or services. Is your
business starting a new line of products or offering a new
service? Perhaps you are enhancing a product or expanding a
service? Put this information on your web site and tell your
visitors about it! This could be the service your next visitor
is looking for!

3. Showcase awards or recognition for you or your business. Has
anything happened to your business that is newsworthy? Have you
been interviewed by a local newspaper or given a presentation at
the local Chamber of Commerce? Tell your visitors about it!

4. Write articles that are of interest to your visitors and
publish them on your web site. Make them informative and
interesting to keep your visitors coming back to read more.
Publish articles on a regular basis.

How often should content be updated? It depends on the
information you are providing. News items should be updated
often enough to remain newsworthy; industry news should be
current, and articles should be written regularly. A good rule
of thumb is to update something on your site at least once a
month. Go ahead and try a regular web site maintenance regimen
for six months -- you'll be pleasantly surprised by the results!

Title: Sensational Web Design Advice

Author: Steve Hill

Article:
Are you one of those people who would love to have your own
personal or business website, but feel you are unable to afford
it? In this article, I explain about how to obtain a quality web
design on the cheap. There are also some superb website
promotion tips.

How to obtain a website on the cheap.

Many people wrongly believe that you have to spend a huge amount
of money to obtain an internet prescence. In my opinion for a
basic website, you should only be looking to pay around £100, to
have a website built. The amount of competition in the internet
web design sector means that there are some great deals to be
found, if you are willing to be patient and to make lots of
phone calls.

To find these deals, my advice would be to first of all, look on
the auction website, ebay. I have seen many people offering
affordable web design services here. You can also try internet
search engines or the Yellow Pages.

Website promotion tips.

I am sure that most people who have a website are looking for an
increase in traffic to their website or an increase in their
google page rank. In general the higher the page rank you have,
the more visitors you are likely to get.

To increase this page rank it is important to build up the
number of backward links your website has. You can do this by
e-mailing other websites preferably in the same business sector
as your own and asking if they would be willing to exchange
links with your site. This however can be very time consuming
and at times can have little reward.

I believe the best way of promoting your website, which is also
cost free, is by writing articles like the one you are reading
here. By submitting these articles to article websites, other
webmasters are then able to use your article on their website,
thus giving you an extra link. This is because you are able to
add your information and web address in the author bio at the
bottom of the page. You also obtain a one way backward link from
the article website which accepted the article.

This is where google put ads
onto your website. When your visitors click on the ads you get
paid.

Title: Avoid Graphical Overload

Author: Ron King

Article:
When designing a website, it's easy to start loading it up with
graphics. While tempting, you have to resist -- otherwise,
you'll end up with graphical overload.

Why is that a bad thing? Here's why.

It Takes Too Long to Download

The first reason to cut down on graphics is that the more there
are, and the larger they are, the longer it will take each of
your pages to download. People are impatient when waiting for
pages to download -- you only have around 5 seconds before your
visitor hits the Back button.

What can you do about this? Apart from using fewer pictures, you
can also make sure that you resize your images in a graphics
editor. This actually makes their file sizes smaller. If you
just resize images by specifying a width and height in HTML or
CSS, they will still be slow to download because the full file
size is being used.

You should consider turning on compression in your image editor.
JPEG files can often be compressed by up to 25% before there's a
noticeable difference in quality. Try different formats and
compression levels to see what works.

It Gets Too Busy

If you use a site with more than 4 images on the page at once,
your eyes are being pulled all over the page. They're not sure
where to focus because the page simply has too much going on.

Look at the front pages of newspapers, and notice how they lead
on 1 picture. Putting 2 pictures on a front page is considered
to be poor: the reader doesn't know where to look.

That goes double for websites, where the viewable area is much
smaller than a newspaper page. Even if you have more than 1
thing to say, it's better to 'go large' with 1 picture and then
explain the other things in text, next to or below it.

It Distracts from the Content

Users visit your site to get information, not to look at your
graphics. Too many graphics will distract from your content, or,
worse, force readers to search for it. Any time your graphics
get in the way of people readily using your site, you're
suffering from graphical overload. And that is a bad thing.

What's the solution? Simply decide which of all those graphics
are really necessary. Remember, don't add graphics just to look
nice, each graphic must have a specific purpose.

An Exception: Photo Galleries

If the purpose of your site is photo presentation, then clearly
multiple images are appropriate. However, don't just stick up
several large photographs -- provide thumbnails: smaller
versions of each image. If interested, the visitor can click on
1 to make it larger.

This fits more pictures on each page, and avoids wasting user
download time and your bandwidth.

Keep in mind that in all web design, the images are there
strictly to support the content. Even when the content is
graphical.
